The tower rises 300 meters tall (984 ft); when it was completed.The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition in 1889, held in celebration of the French Revolution in 1789.

The construction was only meant to last for the duration of the Exposition, but it still stands today, despite all protests from contemporary artists who feared the construction would be the advent of structures without 'individuality' and despite the many people who feared that this huge 'object' would not fit into the architecture of Paris. 

Today, there is no such aversion anymore among the Parisians, and one could not imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower, in fact it has become the symbol of the City of Light.

The man behind the Eiffel Tower was Gustave Eiffel, known from his revolutionary bridge building techniques, as employed in the great viaduct at Garabit in 1884. These techniques would form the basis for the construction of the Eiffel Tower. He was also known for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's iron framework.

The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is now operational and delivering solar electricity to California customers. At full capacity, the facility's trio of 450-foot high towers produces a gross total of 392 megawatts (MW) of solar power, enough electricity to provide 140,000 California homes with clean energy and avoid 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, equal to removing 72,000 vehicles off the road.

Namba Parks having Roof Gardens

Namba Parks is an office and shopping complex located in Namba-naka Nichome, Osaka, Japan, at the place where Osaka’s baseball stadium used to stand until 2003. The complex consists of a 30-storey office tower called Parks Tower and a 120-tenant shopping mall. What makes Namba Park stand out is its dynamic rooftop garden that gradually ascends eight levels as it flows past several city blocks. In addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street, making it easy for passers-by to enter its groves of trees, clusters of rocks, cliffs, lawn, streams, waterfalls, ponds and outdoor terraces.

Beneath the park, a canyon like curved path runs through specialty retail, entertainment and dining venues. Various kinds of restaurants are located on the sixth floor, and shops are located on the second to fifth floors. There is also an amphitheater for live shows, as well as space for small personal vegetable gardens and wagon shops.
When Osaka's baseball stadium closed its doors, it opened the door to a prime redevelopment opportunity in a new commercial district adjacent to Namba Train Station, the first stop from Kansai Airport. Given the location, owner Nankai Electric Railway asked Jerde to create a gateway that would redefine Osaka's identity. So Jerde conceived Namba Parks as a large park, a natural intervention in Osaka's dense and harsh urban condition.
“Namba Parks creates a new natural experience for Osaka that celebrates the interaction of people, culture and recreation,” explained Jon Jerde of The Jerde Partnership who developed the park.

Europe's 12 most impressive metro stations

Opening in 1863, London has the world's oldest underground railway but it also has, in austerely beautiful Westminster, one of Europe's most futuristic-looking stations.
The first metro might have been uncomfortable and unhealthy (toxic steam often entered the train cars due to poor ventilation) but it soon became clear that few cities of any size should be without one.
By the mid-1920s, Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Milan had their own subterranean networks -- with cleaner, electric-powered trains and often also beating London's Tube in the aesthetic appeal of their stations.
Moscow joined the party in 1935 and now boasts one of the busiest metro systems in the world -- carrying more than 6.5 million passengers a day.
But as the following stations show, more than 150 years after the London Underground opened, there's a lot more to a great subway stop than getting from A to B.

1. Toledo, Naples, Italy

One of Naples' co-called Metro Art Stations, this 2012 stop was designed around themes of water and light.

Opened in 2012, Toledo station defies its depth -- at 50 meters, one of the deepest in Naples -- with a design based around themes of light and water. A work called "Light Panels" by Robert Wilson illuminates the station corridor furthest underground. This stunning station has competition: it's part of the city's network of so-called Metro Art Stations.

2. Westfriedhof, Munich, Germany

Enormous dome lights, bathing the platforms in haunting blue, red and yellow shades, make this otherwise ordinary little station roar. Inaugurated in 1998 to little fanfare, this otherwise ordinary looking station took on new life just three years later. In 2001, Westfriedhof's platform was aesthetically enhanced by 11 enormous, domed lighting fixtures that continuously bathe the surroundings in haunting shades of blue, yellow and red.

3. Komsomolskaya (Koltsevaya Line), Moscow

Shall we dance? Looking more like a ballroom than a metro station, this baroque-style stop was inspired by a wartime speech of Stalin's.
Komsomolskaya station's baroque-style decor, historical mosaics and chandeliered ceilings resemble a grand ballroom. Opened in 1952 to alleviate the congestion of one of Moscow's busiest transport hubs, it was Stalin's infamous 1941 wartime speech that inspired the opulence of the mosaics.

4. Olaias, Lisbon, Portugal

A welcome leftover from Lisbon's 1998 world expo, which celebrated 500 years of Portuguese inventions.In 1998, Lisbon hosted a world expo, in part to celebrate 500 years of Portuguese inventions.
Built to help transport the expo's 11 million visitors, the station is a whimsically colorful space that to this day holds its own as a modern work of art.

Stockholm's central station gets stranger the further you descend, until you reach the cave-like platform level, with its abstract floral designs. Above ground, Stockholm's central station looks like a pretty average part of a rapid transit system.
Start boring down, though, and unexpected changes in color and shape reveal a very different animal.
When commuters reach the bold blue and white, cave-like platform at T-Centralen, they're reminded that they've indeed ventured underground.

7. Bockenheimer Warte, Frankfurt, Germany

Like a reminder of the things whizzing around beneath your feet, Zbigniew Peter Pininski's design suggests a subway car that went off the rails.Seeking to distinguish his design from the unobtrusive minimalism of other Frankfurt stations, architect Zbigniew Peter Pininski outdid himself with the fantastical entrance to Bockenheimer Warte.
Depicting a train car crashing through the sidewalk, it leaves commuters either shocked or bemused, but rarely indifferent.

8. "Fosteritos," Bilbao, Spain

Called "Little Fosters" after their ubiquitous architect-creator, Norman Foster, these station entrances sum up Bilbao's fondness for up-to-the-minute style.
Less than 20 years old, Bilbao's metro is the third-largest in Spain.
The curved-glass entrances of many of the stations -- affectionately nicknamed "Fosteritos" ("Little Fosters") after their creator, Lord Foster -- are considered prime examples of the city's modern, up-to-the-minute style.
The transparent structures admit plenty of daytime light and at night are lit up.

9. Palais Royal -- Musée du Louvre, Paris

It's hard to stand out in a city as beautiful as Paris. This beaded metro entrance design from 2000 doesn't try to be meek.In a city as beautiful as Paris, this unconventional station entrance at Place Colette still stands out.
Completed in 2000 (the centennial year of the Paris metro), Jean-Michel Othoniel's "Kiosque des noctambules" ("Kiosk of the night owls") intertwines dazzling colored beads to form two protective cupolas.
A meeker design would be overshadowed by the close proximity of the Louvre Museum and surrounding classic architecture.
In this case, however, it adds a touch of cheeky hipness.

10. Admiralteyskaya, St. Petersburg, Russia

Russia's subway stations are among the world's most impressive. This 2011 addition skilfully blends classic and modern design. St. Petersburg's newest metro stop proves that classic and modern design can coexist harmoniously.
After many setbacks, the station finally opened for business in December 2011.
Stark curved ceilings and low lighting complement traditional marble and arched platforms in what's the deepest station in the network.

11. Plac Wilsona, Warsaw, Poland

This 2005 underground stop named after U.S. President Woodrow Wilson won a metro design award -- possibly from visiting UFOs. The Soviets built some extraordinary metro stations but this 2005 effort, named after U.S. president Woodrow Wilson, showed that a capitalist Poland could come up with some beauties, too.
Unless, as might appear, it was actually built by UFOs.

12. Staromestska, Prague

Actually, all of Prague's stations deserve a place here for the unforgettable dimpled wall design, different for each stop and just on the fun side of good taste.All the stations on Prague's A Line deserve a place in the European metro hall of fame for their distinctive dimpled metal tunnel walls, but Staromestska is the most visited and photographed.
A different color for each station, they look like something from the dystopian film "A Clockwork Orange," but the bubble-wrap design actually strengthens the metal.

New giant 3D printer can build a house in 24 hours

Scientists claim to have developed a revolutionary new giant 3D concrete printer that can build a 2,500-square-foot house in just 24 hours.

The 3D printer, developed by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis from the University of Southern California, could be used to build a whole house, layer by layer, in a single day.
The giant robot replaces construction workers with a nozzle on a gantry, which squirts out concrete and can quickly build a home based on a computer pattern, MSN News reported.
It is "basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building," said Khoshnevis.
'Contour Crafting' is a layered fabrication technology and has great potential for automating the construction of whole structures as well as sub-components, according to the project website.
Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run, embedded in each house all the conduits for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.
The potential applications of this technology are far reaching including in emergency, low-income, and commercial housing.
The technology may potentially reduce energy use and emissions by using a rapid-prototype or 3D printing process to fabricate large components, according to the project website.
Featuring robotic arms and extrusion nozzles, a computer-controlled gantry system moves the nozzle back and forth.
"Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human colonisation before the end of the new century," researchers said on the project website.
With the process, large-scale parts can be fabricated quickly in a layer-by-layer fashion.
The chief advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish that is realised and the greatly enhanced speed of fabrication, according to the project website.
