According to Nathan Eagle, the CEO of rewards platform Jana, India is set to become the largest Facebook market within just a few months. The number of Indian users of the biggest social networking site is increasing fast and will soon overtake those from the US.
There are currently close to 147 million American users of Facebook. Indian users account for roughly 115 million. However, the latter is growing at an annual rate of 47%, whereas the growth rate for the US is just 3.7% a year.
The data was compiled using Facebook’s own reports of revenue according to region. Growth projections were then calculated using these figures.
Off course, this is by no means the final word. Since most Indian internet users are already on Facebook, there will soon be less room left for growth. It could slow down considerably, while the US could see more steady growth and still stay ahead.
In addition, most of the growth from India is with users of smartphones. Revenue from that will be limited when compared to that from laptop, desktop and tablet users. Even if one discards that fact, the actual revenue that Facebook earns is likely to be much higher for the US, even if there are more Indian users.
