Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, UAE
an $25bn Norman Foster-designed project where just a few hundred people are guinea pigs in the world's most advanced laboratory for hi-tech environmental technology.
Here, residents live with driverless electric cars, shaded streets cooled by a huge wind tower and a Big Brother-style "green policeman" monitoring their energy use.
Conceived in 2006, phase one of the city is now complete after three years' work and a spend of $1.4bn. It is estimated to be fully complete by 2020.
Funded by the owners of Abu Dhabi, the reason for this is thought to be the worry that one day oil supplies will run out and in order to maintain there market share in the energy market they need to develop and create new renewable, sustainable, zero carbon energy sources.
