KARACHI: An 18-member Pakistan squad returned home on Monday after winning the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) in Dubai for the first time.
They dominated the circuit that had representatives from 17 countries. Sixteen-year-old debutant Moizullah Baig impressed in his performances against 135 opponents to win the individual title on Saturday.
Pakistan dramatically improved their performance to supersede from an earlier fifth-place show in Birmingham last year.
“We received a warm welcome when we arrived which was unexpected,” Moiz told The Express Tribune on his return with the team. “The reaction from people so far has been overwhelming. People are recognising our achievement and that’s great.”
Meanwhile, Javeria Arshad Mirza secured second position and six other players including Muhammad Inshal finished among the top 20 players in the event.
